Coastal May Gray, Seasonable Overall
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) – Temperatures will remain seasonable to slightly cool through mid-week, with May Gray conditions near the coast. A weak cut-off low will be joined by another trough which will also cut off as a low Wednesday into Thursday. This will reinforce the slightly cool conditions. However, a strengthening and hot ridge of high pressure to our southwest will reach around the low by Friday, sending inland temperatures way up!
Air Quality: Good
Wednesday: Clouds linger on the south side of the bay, otherwise mostly sunny. Highs ranging from the upper 50s to mid-70s on the coast--warmest on the north side of the bay--and 70s to around 90ºF inland. Breezy on the coast, windy up valleys.
***GALE WARNING***
…for the near coastal waters from Point Pinos to Point Piedras Blancas in effect from 3PM Wednesday - 9PM Thursday.
Northwest winds 20 to 30 kt with gusts up to 45 kt expected.
*Strong winds will cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.
Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions. Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure the vessel for hazardous conditions.
Overnight: Low clouds will thicken, filling most valleys by morning. Light drizzle, and patchy fog possible. Mild lows mainly in the 50s. Slightly cooler for sheltered valleys with 40s expected.
Thursday: A few lingering coastal clouds and slightly warmer. Coastal highs in the 60s-70s with upper 70s to low 90s inland. Breezy on the coast, windy up valleys.
Friday: Temperatures soar on Friday as a hot ridge takes over. Expect inland highs to be 15-20ºF above normal. Records for the day are already pretty high, so we may not break any, but it will still be hot. At the coast, weak onshore flow will keep the beaches somewhat cool, but temperatures will rise quickly as you move away from the coast or up in elevation. Coastal highs will range from the 60s-80s with 90s-100s inland.
***HEAT ADVISORY***
…for interior areas of Monterey County, all of San Benito County, Santa Cruz Mountains, and the Santa Clara Valley and Diablo Range in Santa Clara County in effect from 11AM Friday until 8PM Friday.
*Temperatures in the mid 90s to 105 degrees.
*This level of heat affects most individuals sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Impacts possible in some health systems and in heat-sensitive industries.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible and avoid prolonged periods in the sun. In addition, be sure to check up on relatives and neighbors.
Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
Extended: Temperatures will begin to cool on Saturday but it will still be a warm day inland. We’ll cool further as we head into early next week as a deep trough digs down the coast. We’re watching for rain chances too, maybe around Tuesday.
